How long have you been blogging? (Or on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram?) What do you like about it and how has it changed?

Insecure Writers Want to Know

Ah, blogging and social media. I was blogging at blogspot since 2010. Back when those in my South Jersey writing group told me you had to blog about ONE topic on the website. That’s why I had two blogs at that time. My substitute-teaching blog turned into a writing blog. Then I had a family camping blog. I can’t say I had readers flocking to these blogs. Not even now at my new website . But the editor of Cricket Magazine would look to my Camping with Five Kids blog to learn about the adventures and national parks I set my stories in.

Blogging back then, I didn’t know the power of groups like IWSG. I learn so much from you all. I look forward to “seeing” you each month. I cherish your insight. Always!

Facebook and Twitter/X came a bit later. And I just started with Instagram, maybe a year ago. If you follow me on social media, tell me. I’ll follow you back.

Sometimes I struggle, though, to find time—and something interesting or even some announcement—to post on social media regularly. I don’t think I’m that interesting. I don’t have anything important to say. How do YOU keep your social media important and relevant? I truly need your advice here. I’m floundering.

I’m probably overthinking things. I always do. But I’m interested in what you think. Thanks for the input. I’m extremely thankful to you all for being my sounding board and advisors on this scary writing and publishing journey.

I do have one announcement, though. I pitched an essay to Business Insider about how to combine college life with raising a family. And they requested the essay. I’ll let you know when it posts on Business Insider’s website.

Thanks for stopping by my little spot on the web. Please come again! And please sign up for my newsletter. It is greatly appreciated.

This post was written for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group. I’d like to thank our co-hosts for April Janet Alcorn, T. Powell Coltrin, Natalie Aguirre, and Pat Garcia! Please visit them if you can.

  1. Congrats on getting your essay published. I don’t know how you maintained more than one blog. Like Alex, I like blogging best. Sometimes I talk about books I’m reading on social media. I don’t have anything big to announce there either.

    • Thank you for sharing what you talk about on social media, Natalie. I appreciate this. And thank you for your good wishes. They mean a lot. All best to you!

  2. Congratulations on your first pitch win, and in the Business World. That is something to shout out. As for Social Media, I use Facebook and Twitter. I separated my personal Facebook and created a Facebook Author Page and that works well for me.
    Have a lovely day.
    Shalom shalom

    • Thank you, Patricia. I appreciate your good wishes. And yes. I’ve separated my personal Facebook from my Facebook author page, too. This is a tough thing, this thing called social media. All best to you as well.

  3. Congratulations on getting your essay accepted! Sadly, I don’t post on FB, Instagram or X much. Occasionally if I have a post I want people outside of my blogging world to see, I might share it on social media, but I end up getting enough junk in return that I mostly don’t bother.

    • Unfortunately, I don’t post much on FB, Instagram or X either, Liza. But I worry about it. I wish I didn’t.

Truly appreciate your good wishes and your comment here at Adventures in Writing. Have a beautiful day!

  4. Congrats on your acceptance. It’s great we still have IWSG, to me it’s like catching up with family. I also struggle with what to say on social media if I don’t have something exciting happening but I think it’s a good idea to open up to others by asking questions, such as what they’re reading/writing etc.

    • Thanks for your good wishes, Nick. I feel we are all “family” here at IWSG, too. Good idea to just ask what others are writing and/or reading on social media. I need to be more diligent with my social media. Thanks for the tip. Have a wonderful day!

  5. Congrats on getting your essay accepted, VM! That must have felt wonderful! I love blogging. Sometimes I struggle with finding something to write about, and lots of times I end up writing something I didn’t expect when I started the post. I strongly believe everyone is interesting and has a story to tell! Have a great April!

    • Thank you, Louise! Yes, it did. I was feeling kind of low about my writing going nowhere before the acceptance from Business Insider came through.

You are correct. I love talking to people, so writing a blog post or social media shouldn’t be so difficult to me. I also believe everyone has a story to tell. Here’s hoping someone finds mine intriguing. All best to you!

  6. Congrats on having your essay accepted! So excited for it to be published. As for social media — I’m not too sure, either! Book promotion via social media can be exhausting, and I certainly can’t claim that I’ve cracked the code, yet. But here’s hoping! And best of luck to you, too!

    • Thank you for your kind words, Damyanti. I truly appreciate them. Gosh! I wish I wasn’t so frightened of book promotion.

Listen, if you crack the code of social media or book promotion, please be sure and share with us here at Adventures in Writing. All best to you!

  7. Great entry and thoughts on blogging. I think that blogging has helped us evolve as writers, to find our voice, and to make connections. Congrats on the article!

  8. Sometimes it’s not something interesting but something cute. I am on Instagram as Dancing Lemur Press and we balance it between promo posts and pictures of my two cats. (Or other recent fun photo.) I think the cats draw more attention than anything else.

    • Good point, Diane. I do believe balance is needed in every aspect of our life. So why not social media too. I’ll check to be sure we are connected on Instagram. Thanks for visiting Adventures in Writing. Have a beautiful weekend!

    • I so understand that, Janet. Life can seem like it gets in the way of our writing, but we all need to keep busy living life. Thank you for your good wishes. And thanks for visiting Adventures in Writing. Have a beautiful week!
