Science for Kids: Cutting Up Brains

Science for kids can be fun. We started early in my house. I allowed my children to assist with the baking and cooking. Yes! It took longer to prepare meals, breads, and desserts. We made it a hands-on, or rather a hands-in, activity. I wanted my kids to be able to follow a recipe. To follow directions. We practiced reading this way. I wanted the kids to understand how combining different ingredients can create something new, something that could be tasty to eat or interesting to watch happen.

So of course, I continued this tradition of science with my grandchildren.

Making our children and grandchildren inquisitive is important. We want them to question their world, their surroundings. And, we want them to at least be interested in the sciences. There is much more available today in science experiment kits for children.

We bought one of the National Geographic science kits for our grandsons who are 6 and 4. We purchased the “Super Gross Chemistry Set.”

Now don’t get crazy about this. I’ve got a problem with yucky stuff and blood, too. Or anything that even looks like blood. But I’ll do anything for my boys. Try to have your adult children with you when you perform one of these experiments. Especially if one of them has a science degree.

Our daughters helped the boys “create” the brains that they happily dissected later. After the brains chilled for a while. So that Nana didn’t feel quite so grossed out, the boys chose a more calming color for the brains they created. Orange!

Another important thing to accomplish, when showing the kids how interesting science is, is to make it fun. Everyone needs to enjoy the interesting science experiments in these science kits for kids. Simple directions. All the beakers, pipettes, measuring spoons, and petri dishes are included. Capped test tubes and all the chemicals needed to create fascinating experiments. And safety goggles. Always show the children how important safety is.

Have you performed interesting science experiments with your children or grandchildren? Did you have fun? There are many age-appropriate science kits available today. Please share any experiences you may have with science experiments you performed with your children or grandchildren here at Camping with Five Kids. We’d love to share in your adventures.

Thanks for stopping by my little spot on the internet. I hope your 2025 family adventures will be filled with laughter and fond memories.

  1. When I was a kid I got a Chemistry set for Christmas. I eagerly started mixing chemicals. No instruction were provided. Every thing I mixed turned black.

    • What! No instructions?? I wouldn’t know where to begin. Although…I believe my grandsons could create the same “black” mixture that you created all those years ago.

Always a pleasure seeing you here at Camping with Five Kids. Have a beautiful day!

Starting college can be difficult. But starting college at 40 while still raising five children can seem impossible. It is not. Find some tips on how I accomplished this feat in my recent Business Insider article

Helping kids become campers takes time. But it can be done. See how in my recent Business Insider article. I continue to write Parenting articles for Business Insider and share the links in my newsletters.
